In Chinese astrology, there are 10 Heavenly Stems and 12 Earthly
Branches which combines with each other by the pairing of a
Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch to form 60 different variations
over a 60 year cycle. The Heavenly Stems and the Earthly Branches
repeats in sequence in a continuous cycle and the combination
always begin with the pairing of the Heavenly Stem Jia and the
Earthly Branch Zi. The stems will repeat 6 times and the branch 5
times before the same pairing appears again, marking the start of a
new 60 year cycle. These Stems and Branches are associated with
the 4 seasons, the 5 elements, the 12 animal signs and the 24
directions of the compass, amongst other things. It gives meaning
to the forces that shape the times of our lives measured in hours,
days, months and years. The 60 year cycle is tabulated below.
